Denna vecka är klubbens egna reportrar på plats först idag, (torsdag) men ESC Insights Ben Robertson, som också är medlem i klubben och som är en erfaren expert, var på plats i Luleå igår och har lyssnat på låtarna. Det här är hans kommentarer och betyg. Svensk översättning kommer inom kort.
- Mariette – Shout it Out
”73bpm in verse, arguably 146 bpm in chorus. I’m reminded of Shout It Out by David Lindgren with softer production. It’s innocent pop, could imagine in Glee. Mariette will lift, but this is run of the mill rather than something special. - Albin Johnsén – Livet börjar nu
Very Swedish pop ballad, not just in language. 76 Bpm. Singing along with ’Livet Börjar’ by second chorus. Yes, quite predictable. oo-oo post chorus is nice. But yeah, it’s been done. - Drängarna – Piga och Dräng
It’s an Irish jig! Easy to sing a long to. Fiddle melody is hardly fresh but it’s got energy. 128 bpm. That’s a key change! Not an epic one. This is fine, and will do well Live. Some gimmick glass smash at the end? - Amanda Aasa – Late
This sounds like Eko, Red. I loved that song. Also hearing some Veronica Maggio references. This isn’t as strong. interesting 116 bpm choice. Spotify rather than arena I feel. Shame, although probably the best way to ’win’. - Anis Don Demina – Vem e som oss
148 bpm, just like Anna (!). This is actually pumping and an authentic family-friendly rap attempt. Anis sounds impressive. This is the song for the kids – you’ve been warned Swedish preschools! The Malmsjö shout out is a bad idea though. - Faith Kakembo – Crying Rivers
Acapella start. Incredibly calm production, American soul flavoured. Its so not a Melfest song. 63 bpm. There’s a Whitney Houston moment, although not that big, towards the end. Don’t know what to think. - Mohombi – Winners
100 bpm. Remember Hello didn’t work at this point last year. But I did get bored. It sounds slurred especially the ’dreamer’ and ’winners’ lines. Not an effective hook. Let’s see what gimmick is planned, needs it.
On second listen I really see the pre-show favourites need to bring out their A game. No, not a strong semi, but Drängarna, Faith and Anis have their catchment audiences. I’d choose Anis except for last ten seconds. Amanda seems to be last by a mile, which makes me sad.
